In this passage from Ephesians 5: 21- 6:9 we see women being told to honor and respect their husbands and we see the analogy of the church and Christ symbolizing the husband and wife(Ephesians 5:21-27). The way that woman are talked about in this passage give a glimpse into the early church's view of woman. They are treated as under men's control but in the same section men are told to treat them like Christ does the church and in doing so to love them and honor them also.(Ephesians 5:21-27) The way woman are treated in this passage is miles above what they were treated in this time and in a sense it is a progressive view on woman and their treatment. In the passage it also says that men are to "love their wives as they do their own bodies"(Ephesians 5:28). With this the passage brings to light that woman and men are of equal stature in the sight of The Lord if they are to treat their bodies the same way. The biggest difference between men and women in this passage is that men are told to love their wives while woman are told in each case to respect their husbands also bringing to mind the gender differences in what is needed to begin with.(Ephesians 5:33)

To start, I think your blog needs to be broken up in paragraphs. Do a short intro and conclusion to introduce and then bring together your main points. You showed that the text shows how men and women should be treated equally and how it says they should be treated unequally - so which is it? The text may waiver, but if you want to make a strong argument, pick a side and then try and prove it. Is one point stronger than the other?
ReplyDeleteI second the idea that you should break up your posts into paragraphs, if only to give readers a place to take a break.
ReplyDeleteIn our secondary readings, we found that these passages were intended to teach women proper conduct because they were upsetting traditional household because of Paul's teachings. There would be no need to be so insistent on women's conduct in these passages unless they were straying from it.
