Essay 1 - Odell

In the most well known version of the creation story there is only one woman, Eve, who has the most blame placed on her for her actions in eating the fruit. She is also the one that seems to be punished the most as she is punished with pain throughout her and her children's lives, while the male in the story, Adam, is only punished by having to work his entire life. (Genesis 1-3). This version also puts women as less than men in that they seem to be punished by assuming that role in their future society. Women in the story are treated as though they are the only ones to truly blame for creating sin in the world and the men are treated solely as giving into the temptress(lapsley, 48). This account also makes women coming from a mans side as saying she always belonged under his authority. In the other creation story there are two women involved. The first makes the bad decision and then is cast out and a replacement is made, Eve. The women in this story seem to be out for redemption and are portrayed as intelligent and a variety of other positive traits in these women. This story seems to place women in a more positive and equal light, to the men. In this story the woman being taken from the side of the man is shown to make her more of his equal instead of someone for him to be commanding over(Lapsley, 49). Ashlee Odell

  1. In the first creation story there everything on the earth is created in the first five days, birds, animals, land, sea, light, and dark. On the sixth day man and woman are created. Both man and woman both come from the dust of the earth. They are both created at the same time and given dominion over all things of the earth. In this story there is no difference among the genders other than just being created a little differently as one is called man and the other woman. (Genesis 1)

In the second creation story everything is created in the first five days and then man is created from the dust of the earth. He is given dominion over everything and is told to name everything he sees. It is not until God notices that the man is alone that he puts the man to sleep and takes a rib from his side to create a perfect mate, woman. In this story woman are created as a companion and therefore are given a place of lower stature to man. They are not given rule over the earth and it is portrayed that their sole purpose on the earth is to help multiple man and to be at his side for whatever he may need for all of his days. (Genesis 2)

The two stories create a very different order to the earth. In one man and women are equal in every way except for in name. In the other woman is not given a place of stature on the earth.
